Donald Shannon “Don” Betleyoun, 73, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2026, at Barberton Hospital in Barberton, Ohio, after a long battle with several health issues.
Born on November 19, 1952, in Akron, Ohio, Don was known for a life centered on home, family, friendship, and generosity. He was a man who welcomed people in and made sure no one left empty-handed. Those who spent time with him knew the warmth of his table, the abundance of his kitchen, and the steady presence he brought to everyday life.
Don was survived by his wife of 31 years, Georgia “Lynn” (Brown); daughters, Brenda Cottrell (Amy Brooks) and Connie Simone; and sons, M. Scott (Corina) Moles and Shaun Moles. He was also survived by his grandchildren, Anthony Cottrell (Ross Greer), Tanesha (Keith) Thomas, Sierra Moles, Lucas (Tammara) Moles, Latasha (David) Lindley, Jimmy (Nicole) Bennington, Tiffany Bennington, Cameron Moles, Tyler Moles, Dylan Piercefield, Kyrah Piercefield, Skylynn Piercefield, Raylynn Moles, Shaun Moles, Jr., Dayna Moles, and Katana Moles; and by his great-grandchildren, Isaiah Thomas, Mariah Thomas, Everett Moles, Estella Moles, and Camryn Moles, along with many others.
He was preceded in death by his father, Amos Betleyoun; his mother, Sara (Lavelle) Betleyoun; and all his brothers and sisters. Don was the last of his family.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Don was happiest when he could be outdoors or preparing to head there. He always had deer meat in his freezer and loved fishing on Lake Erie. He was also known to fish anywhere he could, including Mogadore Reservoir, Nimisila, and even on trips to New York. These were not passing interests, but part of the rhythm of his life and the way many remembered him.
At home, Don shared another gift: providing for the people around him. He and Lynn grew their own garden and did their own canning, putting up peppers, sauce, and just about anything else that could be prepared and saved. He was always willing to share whatever he had. People did not leave his house without a bag of something from the freezer, and not a soul went hungry when they were at Don and Lynn’s home.
That generosity showed itself most clearly around meals and family gatherings. Don made sure there was always more than enough, whether it was a holiday, a family get-together, or an ordinary Sunday dinner. Meals were never just meat and potatoes. There were several side dishes, multiple meats, and plenty to go around. He would also make something special or extra for the grandkids who did not want what everyone else was having. It may have meant extra work, but to Don it was worth it for the babies, no matter what their age.
In addition to the love of his family, Don had many, many, many friends. There was always someone stopping by a reflection of the many connections he made over the years. His presence was familiar to so many, and his home was a place where people came not only to visit, but to be welcomed.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to everyone who really meant the world to Don and Lynn, with love and appreciation, and to all who knew him on his good days and the not so good days. Special thanks are also shared for Richard “Rico” Lamp, for always being a great friend and showing up; Mark Abraham hunting/fishing buddy; Ed Harbaugh, Mike and Tammy, great friends and neighbors; the late Larry McCune and his sons Cameron and Clayton; the late Herb Blachly and wife Barb, also the great folks at Circle K in Canal Fulton.
Donald Shannon “Don” Betleyoun will be remembered by those who knew him for the life he built around sharing what he had, feeding whoever came through the door, and making room for family, friends, and neighbors alike. His memory remains in the many meals, conversations, visits, and acts of generosity that filled his days and touched the lives of others. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 25, 2026, from 02:00 PM to 05:00 PM at NALC Branch 148 518 Fouse Ave. Food and beverages will be served.
