Elvira Luzano Bhardwaj, MD
January 25, 1929 - May 1, 2026
Elvira Luzano Bhardwaj, MD, passed from this life on May 1, 2026, in Uniontown, Ohio. She is survived by her children, Vianne (Stephen Calhoun) and Grace (Pranav Patel), and by her adored grandson, Gautham. She is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Umesh C. Bhardwaj; by her parents, Julio and Leonor Luzano; and by her siblings, Honorio (Josefina), Ofelia Vergara (Ernesto), Carlito (Aida), and Celia Castaneda (Socrates).
Elvira was born in Apalit, Pampanga, Philippines. After earning her medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas, she briefly worked in private practice (with voluntary rounds of the underserved on weekends) before emigrating to Cleveland, Ohio. During residency training at Doctors’ Hospital, she met the love of her life, Umesh Bhardwaj, at a hospital conference. Following chief residency, she became the Assistant Director of Family Practice at the newly formed Hillcrest Hospital. Board certified in both Family Practice as well as Emergency Medicine, she spent the majority of her career in the emergency room at Suburban Hospital (later, Southpointe Hospital). Ultimately, she worked as a hospitalist at the same location.
Elvira strongly believed that the work of one’s life must be of service to humanity. She felt that the best way to do this was as a doctor. As such, she believed above all else that one must “be good to your patients”. It is a credo that has influenced the practice of her daughter Grace and son-in-law Pranav, and it is among the advice he imparts to his graduating residents and fellows.
Elvira was a devout Catholic who found joy and comfort in prayer. She was an active member of the Association of Philippine Physicians in Ohio; participating in their medical missions abroad was among her most cherished memories. Elvira was happiest in the company of her family and dear friends. She is lovingly missed by many.
The funeral mass will take place at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 342 S Chillicothe Rd, Aurora, OH 44202 at a later date, with visitation to follow at home (255 Warwick Court, Aurora, Ohio 44202).
