John Stanley Griggs, 69, of Akron, Ohio, passed away on April 7, 2026. He was a proud graduate of Ellet High School, Class of 1976.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeanne Shrieve and John Griggs, and his brother, Daniel Griggs.
John is survived by his loving wife, April Griggs; his children, Daniel (Cindy) Griggs, Michelle (Eric) Griggs, and Jay Griggs; his step‑granddaughters, Felicia and Sara Roush; and his great‑grandchildren, Dylan, Chase, Beck, Adien, Maddison, Ellie, Layla, and Hannah. He is also survived by his siblings, Ann Griggs, Debbie (Alan) Bailey, and Thomas Griggs, along with many extended family members.
John was known as a hardworking, dedicated man who would do anything to provide for his family — including walking four to six miles to work jobs baking bread or moving appliances. He had a kind soul and truly cared for others, both humans and animals alike. His compassion and generosity were felt by all who knew him.
John loved being outdoors, especially spending time at Hyre Park, which he visited in memory of his dear friend, Jay Williams. He often brought his dog, Spot, along with him, and whenever he spotted a squirrel, he would proudly say, “Attack the Klingon!” — a perfect reflection of his humor and love for Star Trek. While at the park, he was also often heard shouting “Apple” so his loved ones could find his location, a small but unforgettable habit that brought smiles to many.
After a long day’s work, John enjoyed relaxing with a beer while watching his favorite shows, MASH* and Star Trek. He spent many hours in his man cave listening to music, especially the Beatles. John had a truly unique sense of humor that left a lasting impression on everyone he met.
The family will be holding a celebration of life on Saturday, May 30th at the Center on the Lake from 1pm-3pm.
