John Thomas Hoffman, age 73, passed away on July 17, 2025, after a long and complex journey through life. Born on November 9, 1951, in Akron, Ohio, John was a man of quiet passions. He was a Graduate of University of Akron with an Art and Teaching Degree.
He is survived by his children, Holly West (spouse Michael) and Nicholas Hoffman, and his cherished grandchildren: Delaney, Adelynn, Finley and Declan Hoffman; Aiden and Colin West. Special thanks to Ruth who cared for John in his later years and many cousins, nieces and nephews who provided companionship and care. Each of them carries forward his legacy in their own unique way. Preceded in death by his parents Ruby and Harold Hoffman and biological mother Ruth Triplett.
John found joy in the simple pleasures of life—he was an avid reader, often lost in the pages of history, mystery, and philosophy. John was an artist. His love for gardening brought beauty and peace to his surroundings.
His life was also marked by struggle. John battled alcoholism, a disease that affects not only the individual but the family and community around them. His story is a reminder of the importance of compassion, understanding, and the urgent need for support and healing. Addiction is a disease—not a moral failing—and its impact is profound and far-reaching.
Though his path was not always easy, John’s life mattered. He was loved, he will be missed, and he leaves behind a family that honors both his strengths and his struggles.
A private memorial will be held by the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations supporting addiction recovery and mental health awareness.
