After a devastating vehicle accident leading to months of paralysis and multiple complications, Mary Lynn Hahn succumbed to her injuries and went home to God on May 5th. ‘Mary’ to some and ‘Lynn’ to others, she was a quiet and reserved person who kept to herself, supporting and loving her family foremost. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, one child and two husbands.
Born in 1943 to her parents Horace and Anna Pauline, living on their farm and homestead in Springfield Township, Ohio, she grew up with her sister Hazella driving tractors and working her chores. She attended Springfield Township schools and North High School. Part of a tight knit, family-oriented community she lived most of her life in the same neighborhood, living most of her years in houses her father built.
She was married to Robert H. Montgomery during the Vietnam era, her son Robert Montgomery Jr. born shortly after their marriage. ‘Bobby’ as he was known, succumbed to sudden infant death syndrome a few months after birth, having lived from March 1969 to May 1969. A year later in August 1970, her second son, Kenneth, was both to the couple. She married Kenneth Richard Hahn in 1977, with her third son, Richard A. Hahn, born in 1978. ‘Lynn’ as her sons know her, was a caring mother who would do anything for her family and gave them all she could. When her family expanded with additional family members such as Ken's wife Rebecca, she always extended her heart to them and cared for them deeply.
She did enjoy working, working right up to the point of her accident. Over the years she worked at Lawsons, multiple dry cleaners and more. For years she enjoyed working at Springfield Township Schools in the cafeteria, helping the children with their lunches. She also spent many years working for Delbert Smith Greenhouses, doing a much better job keeping their plants alive then those she had at home. Her most defining role though came late in life. She spent her final years working as a demonstrator at Sam’s Club. For a quiet, shy person like ‘Mary’ as her co-workers knew her, it was a complete personality shift. Her sons still cannot understand how she, being such an introvert, could enjoy talking to and interacting with hundreds of customers each day.
She loved her pets, always enjoying and over-feeding her dogs. She also was an avid animal lover, with giraffes being her favorite. One trip to the drive through safari park she even tried to hug a giraffe, refusing to let it go and wanting to take it home, pulling its head into the car.
Her garden was always a source of pride for her. Each spring and summer she spent tending to it, working to bring in her beloved green fried tomatoes. Her sons remember the years picking and canning fruits and vegetables with her. And although she was always a self-proclaimed ‘horrible’ cook, her simple potato salad and simple pies will be missed around the holidays.
No matter whether you knew her as ‘Mary’ or as ‘Lynn’, she surely made an impression on you, and will be desperately missed by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to Millheim United Church of Christ, 2260 Myersville Road, Akron, Ohio 44312. A celebration of life dinner will be held at a later date, please contact her family for details if you would like to attend.
