Without a word, he posed the deepest questions. We wonder, how could this small body hold so immense a thing as death. And, isn’t it true, death steals everything, except our stories. From time to time, there is a happening, such as when the heavens sent us Matthew Andrew. With broken brain and bent walk, our changeling assailed us with the clamor of neediness and the tether of exhaustion, while illuminating us with his innocence. His genuine and mute life, though pale and poor, each day gave birth to the royal simplicity of his gazing and gentle personhood. His muteness held the consummate prayer. Beyond this shuddering mystery is the embracing mercy.
And now, heeding the beckoning call of the dancing High Elves, he becomes himself, nevermore the changeling. He returns to the torch-lit safe heavens. Forevermore, leaping like the deer in ever growing circles, tracing rings around the moon, singing songs of gladness, he reminds us that life is a spell so exquisite that everything conspires to break it. Look often, and see for yourself.
In giving voice to Matthew, we say thank you to his family and his many helpers who served to keep him safe and sound. You know who you are. Be at peace. Though much is taken, much abides. Keep him in your heart for a while.
Broken brain, bent walk,
Simple child for all to know,
Came to be with us.
