Rose Ann Niewiarowski (née Triano) passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early evening of Sunday, October 11, 2026. She was 93. Rose was pre-deceased by her husband Henry, and is survived by daughter, Susan and her husband Jim Herbeck; son, Peter and his wife Carol Murphy; grandchildren, Sofie Herbeck and Remik Niewiarowski — along with nieces, nephews, cousins, sister-in-law, many friends, and her beloved cat Tabitha.
Rose was born in 1933 in Mount Vernon, NY. She grew up in a loving extended Italian family. She enjoyed school and especially excelled in foreign languages. At various points in her life, Rose was fluent in Italian, French, Spanish, and Polish. In 1957, during a sojourn in Caracas, Venezuela, Rose met the love of her life and eventual husband Henry. Henry was a student in an English class Rose was teaching at the Berlitz School and after many months of a whirlwind courtship they were wed in 1958.
Rose’s life as a newlywed and then a young mother in Caracas was among friends and family within the Polish community that had settled in Venezuela after WWII. In 1965, the family moved from Caracas to NY, and in 1966, settled into a home in Ossining, NY, where they remained until 1976. Rose was a devoted mother and homemaker. She was an excellent cook and bread-maker, extending her Italian repertoire to include Polish cuisine. She enjoyed hosting big family dinners — her home was a hub for joyful gatherings with family, friends, and neighbors. Christmas was always a much-favored holiday. Rose began her tradition of baking holiday cookies at the age of twelve and in later years, was making 8 or 9 different kinds of cookies.
Between 1976 and 1985, Henry’s job required a series of relocations: Manila, the Philippines; Caracas, Venezuela (second time around), and finally, Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Other travels brought them to Iran, Turkey, Beirut, Italy, France, and Japan. After retirement, Rose and Henry remained in Ponte Vedra. In 1998, they moved to Akron, Ohio, in time for the birth of their grandson Remik. Rose has been in Akron ever since.
Rose was an avid gardener and cultivated lovely gardens at each of her homes. She also took pleasure in listening to a broad range of music — including classical, folk, pop, R&B, and jazz. While in her early 20s, Rose and her friends would go into NYC to hear jazz at the Apollo Theater. Rose built up quite an extensive CD collection — there was always music playing in the house.
Apart from family, Rose’s other love was animals — most especially cats. She provided a good home to many strays over the years and when she moved to Akron she had six cats. Tabitha, an outdoor cat she adopted, was her constant companion these past few years and was by her side when she passed away.
In recent years Rose struggled with the progression of Alzheimer’s Disease. Thankfully, she never reached the stage of not being able to recognize family or friends. In her final weeks Rose was cared for by many compassionate earthly angels.
Rose, “Rosita,” “Mama Rosa” had a huge, loving heart — she always thought about other people before herself. She was devoted to her family and was a loyal friend. During her long life she was a much-beloved wife, mother, aunt, and grandmother. Rose will be very much missed.
In keeping with Rose’s spirit, charitable donations made to animal rescue organizations would be appreciated.
