Sherie Lyn Rusu-Hammond

Akron

Sherie L. Rusu-Hammond, 64, of Akron, Ohio, passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2026, following a courageous 10-month battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Sherie was born to Larry Rusu and Miriam Casher. She lived life on her own terms and was a true free spirit with a bit of a wild side, yet anyone who knew her also knew the kindness, generosity, and love she carried in her heart. She enjoyed relaxing on her front porch, soaking up sunny days, spending summertime on the boat with dear friends, gardening and making memories with those she loved most.

To her family, Sherie was the strongest person they knew. Even as glioblastoma slowly took so much from her, it never took her strength, her compassion, or the deep love she had for her family. She faced every challenge with remarkable courage and grace, inspiring those around her until the very end.

Above all else, Sherie was a devoted mother and grandmother. As she would always say, “her girls” were the center of her world, her daughters and granddaughters who brought her endless pride and joy.

Sherie is survived by her daughters, Samantha Rusu (Steve), Brandy Gage (Andrew), and her bonus daughter, Jessica Bills (Bryan); her granddaughters, Lexy Howard and Sofia Gage; her bonus granddaughters, Amira and Brynlee; her brother, Michael Rusu (Joy); her sisters, Melodye Colando (Jack) and Valerie “Cookie” Schreckengost (the late Nick); her sister-in-law, Tonia Rusu, who loved and supported Sherie just like a sister; her special friends, Michael Widemire and Sami Ziadeh; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends. She adored her faithful dog, Sky, who was always by her side, and never stopped loving her beloved cat, Roxy.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Larry Rusu and Miriam Casher; her stepfather, Fred Casher; her former husband, Louis “Gene” Hammond; and her beloved twin brother, Gary Rusu.

Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer. While it changed many parts of Sherie’s life, it could never define the remarkable woman she was. In accordance with her wishes, Sherie spent her final moments peacefully at home, surrounded by the love of her family, with her daughter Samantha and dear friend Sami by her side. The family hopes that greater awareness and continued research will one day spare others from this devastating disease.
