Shirley Jean Petrey

Shirley J. Petrey, age 89, of Wadsworth, passed away in 2025 following a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born on July 3, 1936, in Akron, Ohio, to the late Merle and Ruth (Harvey) DeMass, Shirley grew up with a love for family, faith, and life’s simple joys. She married her “best buddy,” Robert, and together they shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. Side by side, they built a loving home, raised their family, and supported one another through every season of life.

Shirley was known for her beautiful smile, warm hugs, and generous spirit. She served as a children’s leader for Bible Study Fellowship, a role she cherished deeply, and was active in various churches in both Ohio and Florida over the years. She enjoyed sewing, baking, traveling, cheering on her beloved Cleveland Indians, and welcoming friends and family into her home. Among her fondest memories were trips to baseball games with her father, including attending the 1948 World Series—a story she loved to share.

Though Alzheimer’s Disease is a difficult journey, Shirley’s stories became gifts, offering her family glimpses into people and memories they otherwise may never have known.

She will be dearly missed by her children, Becky (David) Gluck, Donna (John) Murphy, and Roger (Debbie) Petrey; her grandchildren, Kevin Murphy, Olivia Petrey, Eleanor (Mark) Mathews, Paul Gluck, and Mikaela Petrey; as well as many nieces and nephews she treasured.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert, her parents, and her siblings Arlys Riggle, Robert DeMass, Bruce DeMass, Peggy Townsend, Norma Masterson, and Irene Clark. Always holding a special place in her heart was her faithful companion, Suzie dog, who loved peanut butter cups.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of The Inn at CoalRidge for the love and care given to Shirley over the last six years, and to Harmony Hospice for their compassion and care. They have all been amazing.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date.
