In Loving Memory of Woodrow “Woody” Smith
January 30, 1944 – August 1, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Woodrow “Woody” Smith, a beloved grandfather, great-grandfather, and proud Vietnam veteran (1967-1971 Private First Class, United States Army), who departed this life on August 1, 2025, at the age of 81.
Born on January 30, 1944, Woody lived a life marked by courage, love, and quiet strength. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, demonstrating the kind of bravery and resilience that would define him throughout his life. His dedication to his country was matched only by his love for his family.
A devoted grandfather and great-grandfather, Woody found his greatest joy in watching his family grow. He never missed an opportunity to share a story, offer guidance, or cheer from the sidelines. His presence was a steady and comforting force, and his pride in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild was immeasurable.
Those who knew Woody will remember his steady demeanor, his sharp wit, and the way he made everyone feel at ease. He was a man of honor, humility, and quiet faith—never asking for much but giving everything he had.
Woody was preceded in death by his parents David Lee Smith and Edker Lula Byrd Smith, both his wives Barbara Francis and Cathy Patterson. Seven brothers Leonard, Chester, George, Basil, Joe, Thurman and David, as well as six sisters Elizabeth, Wilma, Myrtle, Marie, Edna, and Jean.
He is a cherished father of Woody (Donie) Smith and Melissa (Larry) Smith, loving grandfather to his grandchildren Haleigh (Austin) Jones, Olivia (Chris) Gibson and Julia Smith, and great-grandchild Isla. He is also survived by his sisters Nelly Hall and Reda Mills and many nieces and nephews. A legacy of love, strength, and service will live on in each of them.
